Toxoplasmosis
Toxoplasmosis is a disease which occurs world-wide in both humans and a wide range of animals, and is most commonly carried by cats.
The infection normally causes no harm. About 80% of people who are infected do not have symptoms, but those who do may have flu-like symptoms such as fever and aches and pains.
Toxoplasmosis is most severe if an infected mother passes it to her unborn fetus, where the infection is often fatal. If the infant survives it may be disabled, mentally retarded and blind.
Rats are also known carriers of Toxoplasmosis, where the disease is passed on through their faeces.
Most people do not need treatment because the infection usually disappears by itself, but those who need drug treatment include infants, people with weak immune systems and those whose eyes are affected.
General advice includes taking whatever measures are feasible to reduce rodent populations, such as clearing rubbish and preventing rodent access into buildings.
In addition, it is advisable to wear gloves when cleaning out litter trays, gardening, and handling raw meat.
